No-till Producer, Gettysburg, SD
Ralph Holzwarth of Gettysburg, SD, started the family farming operation in 1972 with conventional farming practices which consisted of grain and livestock. He moved to no-till farming in 1989 when he sprayed his first field and planted that field using no-till in 1990. By 1993 the farm was 100% no-till. Through the years Ralph has expanded crop rotations to use a low disturbance, high residue system to the maximum benefits. In 2000 he eliminated the livestock and is now completely a grain-farming operation. Today's operation also includes the use of cover crops and precision farming to maximize his no-till acres.
