Byron Shelton, Senior Program Director, Savory Institute

Allan Savory’s work originated in response to some of the most pressing problems of the world’s grasslands and is often associated with Holistic Planned Grazing. However, did you know that Holistic Management provides a powerful framework for managing any system of complexity?

Holistic Management helps us solve complex problems in any natural resource environment and provides the tools needed to best manage resources for long-term vitality and resilience.

Byron will introduce the toolbox of insights and strategies that Holistic Managers use. These tools help us choose from among the many options available, as we seek to manage the complexity inherent in living, biological and human systems. This session will provide you with an introduction to the simple but powerful processes that Holistic Managers utilize, including:

  • Whole-farm business and financial planning
  • Planned grazing and proper livestock management, which includes making crop decisions and integrating livestock with crops
  • Reading the land for the earliest signs of results from our management decisions, and making our next decisions
  • Long-term land planning to help make our biggest infrastructure decisions.

Byron will also include some simple exercises and provide examples of Holistic Management in action.
